Moving Marathon Oil
to a Reliability Culture
The one thing that remains constant in refining is change. In the late 1990’s refining margins were down, then up, and recently have once again turned downward. In the midst of these business cycle swings, new environmental regulations and safety standards were imposed. Compounding this mayhem was fierce competition that eventually forced over half of the plants in the United States out of business, leaving the remainder to face an ever-expanding market demand.
Marathon Oil Corporation (MOC) has recognized that improving plant reliability can provide a competitive advantage in such a challenging business environment. This led the company to undertake a strategic, long-term reliability initiative that ultimately generated financial benefits and fundamentally changed the company. One key element in this program was the selection and implementation of an Asset Performance Management (APM) system that could be used to identify and prioritize reliability improvements.
